Lionel Hampton — Ring Dem Bells

Thanks to Icarus Lazuli

Here is Lionel Hampton and his All Stars from 1938 with their Version of Duke Ellington’s Ring Dem Bells. This is an up tempo version as was Ellington’s original version. Lionel Hampton was originally a drummer who became one of the early masters of the vibraphone, commonly called the vibes. The band members might have included Chu Berry, Harry Carney, Benny Carter, Jess Stacy. Hampton  used different musicians from different bands for these recordings from 1937-1939.

It also occurs to me that some of the players on these sessions couldn’t be given credits on the original recording because of exclusive recording contracts with other record companies.  Good musicians would be more than willing to sit in on a recording date just for the experience and joy of playing with other players they admired.  Benny Goodman sat in on Billie Holiday sessions without credit.  Once again, I can’t determine who, other than Jess Stacy is on this specific tune. I don’t want to guess.  Lionel Hampton…one of the all time greats of jazz.
