Fats Waller — I Understand

Thanks for the You Tube to Hans Pfaall

I Understand was recorded on May 13, 1941. Fats was in a thoughtful mood that day. Joined on this song with Fats, piano and vocal; were John Hamilton, trumpet; John Smith, guitar; Charles Turner, bass; Slick Jones, drums; and Gene Sedric, reeds. Fats knew how to get the most out of the 3 minutes available on a 78 RPM record.  It was during the nervous calm of that year before the storm hit on December 7th.  I Understand was written in 1941, music by Mabel Wayne and lyrics by our old friend Kim Gannon.  It was recorded by the Jazz stars of the 1940’s and early 50’s.
